Vocational Education

Vocational Education & Pathways at St Eugene College

At St Eugene College, we are committed to nurturing the whole person by providing purposeful career education and vocational pathways that empower students to transition confidently beyond school. Guided by our Catholic ethos and our college vision — “Enter to learn, dare to grow, leave to serve” — we support each young person to discern their gifts, explore their vocation and make informed choices for work, training and further study.

Why Vocational Pathways at St Eugene College?

Vocational pathways at St Eugene College:

  • Honour the dignity, strengths and aspirations of every student

  • Support multiple, valued pathways beyond school

  • Support university, vocational and applied pathways, including preparation for tertiary study, early-offer and Head Start programs

  • Develop employability skills, independence and responsibility

  • Build strong partnerships with families, industry and training providers

  • Prepare students for meaningful participation in work, community and lifelong learning

This commitment ensures every student is supported to find a pathway that is right for them.

Work Experience In Action

Work Experience Request and Approval Form (PDF 231.3KB)

Student request, parent/carer approval and school pre-approval
Email: pbuypathways@bne.catholic.edu.au

Purpose: This form collects initial information from students seeking work experience and records school readiness approval before official work experience documentation is progressed. Work experience is an opportunity to explore future pathways, develop workplace skills and represent the College positively in the wider community. Approval is based on student readiness, attendance, behaviour, curriculum engagement and suitability of the proposed placement. This form does not replace official BCE/DoE work experience agreement forms, risk assessment requirements or Activ8 Pathways documentation.

Pathways In Action

One of the greatest privileges of working in Pathways is seeing young people step out of the classroom and into the real world, discovering talents, interests, and confidence they may never have known they possessed.

Over recent weeks, several St Eugene College students have been making the most of exciting work experience opportunities with Nova Ford, Zeus Electrical & Air Conditioning, DRM Plumbing Solutions, and AusSpark Electrical.

These young people are not just learning about jobs. They are learning about responsibility, communication, teamwork, punctuality, and what it means to contribute as part of a workplace.

Every day they attend their placements, they are growing in confidence and taking important steps towards their future careers.
We would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to these wonderful businesses for partnering with St Eugene College and investing in our young people.

By opening their doors, sharing their knowledge, and welcoming students into their workplaces, they are helping shape the next generation of workers, tradespeople, and community members. Opportunities like these have a lasting impact, and we are incredibly grateful for their support.

White Card Success

Introducing Blue Dog Training's 2026 Queensland Training Awards Nominees
Recently, the Pathways Team hosted a highly successful White Card training day here at St Eugene College.
More than 20 students participated, and we are proud to share that every student successfully completed the course.
For many parents and carers, a White Card may be unfamiliar. It is a nationally recognised safety qualification required before a person can enter most construction and building sites. Whether a young person is interested in carpentry, plumbing, electrical work, landscaping, painting, roofing, civil construction, or many other trades, a White Card is often their first step towards gaining real industry experience.
The construction industry is responsible for building and maintaining the places we use every day, including homes, schools, roads, sporting facilities, shopping centres, hospitals, and community infrastructure. It is an industry filled with opportunity and a sector that relies on skilled, hardworking people.
By successfully completing their White Card training, these students have demonstrated their commitment to workplace safety and are now better prepared to explore work experience opportunities within the construction industry.
We congratulate every student involved and thank Blue Dog Training for helping make the day such a success.
Exciting Opportunities with Brisbane City Council

Exciting Opportunities with Brisbane City Council

Brisbane City Council - Wikipedia
The Pathways Team is also excited to share that a promising new partnership is beginning to develop between Brisbane City Council and Catholic Education.
We have recently begun working with Brisbane City Council's Work Experience Coordinators to create meaningful opportunities for St Eugene students, with the first placement likely to be based at the Virginia Bus Depot.
What makes this opportunity particularly exciting is the variety of trades students will experience. The proposed program will begin with a site tour, allowing students to meet staff and gain an understanding of how the depot operates. Students will then have the opportunity to participate in work experience across four different trade areas:
  • Coach Building
  • Heavy Diesel Mechanics
  • Auto Electrical
  • Printing
Rather than spending time in just one trade, students will gain a broad understanding of several career pathways, helping them make informed decisions about their future.
At this stage Brisbane City Council can accommodate one student at a time, so opportunities will be limited and there may be a wait for interested students. However, this partnership is an exciting step forward, and we are committed to working closely with Council to create more opportunities in the future.
We encourage families to watch this space as we continue to grow this partnership and open new doors for our students.

One of the greatest strengths of St Eugene College is our community.
Many of our most successful work experience opportunities come through the generosity of parents, carers, family members, and local businesses who are willing to give a young person a chance.
If you own a business, work in an interesting industry, or know of a workplace that may be willing to host a student for work experience, we would love to hear from you.
A few days of work experience can change the direction of a young person's life.

Sometimes all it takes is one opportunity, one encouraging mentor, or one workplace experience to help a student discover where they belong.
If you are interested in supporting a St Eugene student through work experience, please contact the Pathways Team.

As an Industry Engagement Officer, my heartfelt desire is to see every St Eugene student embrace our College vision: Enter to Learn, Dare to Grow, Leave to Serve.
When our young people step into workplaces, try new challenges, and serve their communities with courage and character, we see that vision come to life.
And that is something truly worth celebrating.

Career education is embedded from Prep to Year 12. Students progressively build self-awareness, explore opportunities and develop the skills required for future pathways through ageappropriate learning experiences connected to realworld contexts.

Year 10 Career Education

In Year 10, all students undertake a specialised Career Education course, a key transition point within our P–12 pathway model. The course supports students to:

  • Identify strengths, interests and personal goals

  • Explore academic, vocational and applied senior pathways

  • Make informed subject selections aligned with QCAA senior schooling options

  • Develop planning, decision-making and career management skills

This course ensures students enter senior schooling with clarity, confidence and purpose. As part of the program, students also complete a QCAA Short Course in Career Education, gaining a recognised qualification that supports pathway planning and senior subject selection. The course also supports students with university aspirations, including awareness of early offer and Head Start programs, and participation in targeted career, tertiary and transition workshops that build readiness for further study.

St Eugene College provides structured work experience opportunities that support authentic learning and community engagement. Through work experience, students:

  • Participate in real workplace environments

  • Develop employability and communication skills

  • Explore industries and career interests

  • Build confidence, responsibility and local industry connections

Work experience plays a vital role in shaping informed and realistic pathway decisions.

Students may undertake School Based Apprenticeships and Traineeships (SATs) while completing their senior studies. These QCAArecognised pathways enable students to:

  • Combine school, training and paid employment

  • Work towards nationally recognised qualifications

  • Gain valuable industry experience

  • Transition smoothly into employment or further training after school

St Eugene College supports access to external trade and training courses through partnerships with registered training organisations and industry providers. These pathways are aligned with BCE and QCAA requirements and support students pursuing applied and vocational learning options beyond the classroom.
