A Shared Vision for the Journey Ahead
Over the next three years, St Eugene College will be guided by a shared theme that reflects our identity as a de Mazenod community and responds intentionally to the needs of our time. Belong. Grow. Serve. is more than a strategic direction; it is a call to live our faith in relationship with one another.
Rooted in the vision of St Eugene de Mazenod, this theme invites our community to strengthen belonging, nurture growth, and respond generously in service. It reflects Eugene’s conviction that renewal does not begin with structures or systems, but with relationships, where people are known, valued, and supported. In a world often marked by disconnection, our College commits to forming a community where each person belongs, contributes, and carries responsibility for the whole.
“Live the life of the family of which you are a part”
To give visible expression to this journey, the College commissioned a special artwork by artist Kylie Farralley. The painting accompanies and illuminates our direction as a community, telling a story of formation, connection, and shared purpose.
Inspired by St Eugene’s invitation to the early Oblates to “live the life of the family of which you are a part,” the artwork reflects the Oblate understanding of community as something lived, not simply spoken about. Guided by the College’s focus on belonging, growing, and serving, the painting captures the experience of journeying through education from Prep to Year 12.
Kylie Farralley shared her explanation of the artwork:
Flowing, overlapping forms move across the canvas, representing individuals coming together as one community. Smaller shapes gradually become larger, symbolising students entering the College and developing over time through learning, relationships, and faith. As the painting unfolds, the colours gently lighten, reflecting personal, spiritual, and communal growth.
A strong tree emerges naturally within the artwork, symbolising knowledge, teaching, and learning. Grounded in the earth, it acknowledges our connection to place and our respect for the Gubbi Gubbi people, the Traditional Custodians of the land on which our College stands. Elements such as Burpengary Creek and wattle further honour the land, its beauty, and its stories.
The gentle outline of St Eugene de Mazenod is visible within the painting, not dominating, but present, reminding us that he walks alongside us as a guide and role model. Subtle references to familiar St Eugene quotes invite reflection on light, hope, and identity in the eyes of God.
This artwork reflects movement, connection, and shared journey. It reminds us that belonging is not static, it is formed over time through presence, challenge, growth, and walking together. As members of the St Eugene College community, we are invited to find ourselves within the painting and to live its message each day as we belong, grow, and serve together.
