Religious Identity and Culture

The cross is at the physical centre of St Eugene College, symbolizing Christ at the very heart of our community. In the same way, the cross is central to our Oblate spirituality. At St Eugene College, we are charged with providing students with a vision of the world as it is and as it COULD be. By participating in all that St Eugene College has to offer, students come to realise new, exciting possibilities for their lives based on Gospel values. Formation, Belonging and Mission

Informed by St Eugene’s vision of forming people who are “humans first, then Christians, and finally saints”, our P-12 Religious Education Program prioritises belonging, dignity, and accompaniment. Through prayer, retreats, pastoral care, social justice initiatives, and student voice, learners are invited to reflect on who they are, what they value, and how they are called to act. Students are challenged to see beyond themselves, to stand with those on the margins, and to live with courage and compassion, leaving nothing undared for the Kingdom of God.

Religious Education in a Contemporary Context

The vision for Religious Education at St Eugene College reflects the Brisbane Archdiocesan vision:

“We aspire to educate students who are challenged to live the Gospel of Jesus Christ and who are literate in the Catholic and broader Christian tradition so that they might participate critically and authentically in faith contexts and wider society.”

At St Eugene College, this vision is shaped by the De Mazenod charism, which stems from and reflects Christ’s mission and teaching. Inspired by the example of St Eugene de Mazenod, we strive to live the Gospel values in our relationships and daily life, seeking to be the face of Christ within our community of Burpengary.

Religious Education at St Eugene College is expressed through the two complementary dimensions of:

  • The classroom teaching and learning of Religion, grounded in the Brisbane Catholic Education Religious Education Curriculum, and

  • The Religious Life of the School, where faith is experienced through prayer, liturgy, service, reflection, and community life.

 

Our approach to Religious Education is educational rather than catechetical, responsive to the diverse religious backgrounds of our students. Learning environments are intentionally shaped by dialogue, inquiry, and respect, enabling students to explore questions of meaning, belief, and identity in a thoughtful and open way.

Across Prep to Year 12, students engage with the four interconnected strands of the Religious Education curriculum:

  • Beliefs

  • Sacred Texts

  • Church

  • Christian Life

 

These strands are taught in an integrated way, supporting students to develop religious literacy, critical thinking, and the capacity to make meaning in their own lives and in society (Catholic Education, Archdiocese of Brisbane, 2013, p.11).

Prayer and Worship

Our community is enhanced by prayer and worship, nourishing the spiritual growth of members of our community. Liturgical celebrations and rituals are integral to the religious life of the college. Families are always welcome to attend whole college and year level liturgies and assembly prayers.

Traditional Christian prayers are taught and daily classroom prayer is a hallmark of college life.
Sacramental preparation for Confirmation, First Holy Communion and Reconciliation is conducted by Saint Eugene Parish. For further details contact the parish office.

Social Action and Justice

Social action and justice is central to an Oblate understanding of the person and message of Jesus Christ. Social action and justice begins with building right relationships centred round the Catholic Social Teaching of respecting the dignity of every person. Our community is made up of people of a diverse range of cultural, social and religious backgrounds. All are welcome. Outreach is a hallmark of our college community and provides practical opportunities for living out our Oblate charism. Prayerful reflection is part of the regular practice of service and action and are key expressions of the spirituality of St Eugene’s.
